Zodiac Stones
Your sign. Your stone. Your story. A guide to the gemstones traditionally linked with the twelve signs of the zodiac.
A Zodiac Tradition
Zodiac stones are gemstones associated with the twelve signs of the western zodiac. Like birthstones, the lists come from tradition rather than science, and different sources give different stones for the same sign, so the list below is best treated as a popular guide rather than a fixed rule.
Zodiac Signs and Their Stones
A widely used modern list, with the usual western zodiac dates. The exact changeover day can move by a day from one year to the next.
- Aries (21 March to 19 April): Bloodstone
- Taurus (20 April to 20 May): Emerald
- Gemini (21 May to 20 June): Moonstone
- Cancer (21 June to 22 July): Ruby
- Leo (23 July to 22 August): Peridot
- Virgo (23 August to 22 September): Sapphire
- Libra (23 September to 22 October): Opal
- Scorpio (23 October to 21 November): Topaz
- Sagittarius (22 November to 21 December): Turquoise
- Capricorn (22 December to 19 January): Garnet
- Aquarius (20 January to 18 February): Amethyst
- Pisces (19 February to 20 March): Aquamarine
Other Stones You May See
Older lists often give a different stone for many signs: sapphire for Taurus, agate for Gemini, emerald for Cancer, onyx for Leo, carnelian for Virgo, chrysolite (peridot) for Libra, beryl for Scorpio, topaz or citrine for Sagittarius, ruby for Capricorn, garnet for Aquarius and amethyst for Pisces, with bloodstone for Aries on both lists. If you follow a particular list, tell us and we will work with it.
Zodiac Stones in Jewellery
A zodiac stone can be set in a pendant, ring, bracelet or earrings, on its own or alongside diamonds. The stones of several family members can also be combined in one personal piece. We can make zodiac jewellery to order in our workshop; see Bespoke Jewellery for how it works.
Care Depends on the Stone
The stones on the list are not equally hard. Opal, turquoise and moonstone are softer and more delicate than sapphire or ruby, and emerald often contains natural inclusions that need gentle handling. Use the Gemstone Care guide for the specific stone, and see Birthstones and Astrology Stones for the related traditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a sign have more than one stone?
Yes. Different traditions give different stones, and many lists offer alternatives for the same sign.
Can you make a piece with my zodiac stone?
Yes. Tell us your sign, the stone you would like and the kind of piece, and we will talk you through the options.
Do zodiac stones have special powers?
Any meaning given to a zodiac stone is a matter of tradition and personal belief. We supply and set the stone as jewellery and make no claims about effects on health, luck or fortune.
What is the difference between a zodiac stone and a birthstone?
A birthstone follows the calendar month you were born in. A zodiac stone follows your star sign, which runs from around the 20th of one month to around the 20th of the next, so the two can be different stones.
