Diamond Certificates & Laboratory Reports
What independent reports tell you – and what they do not.
What a Diamond Report Is
A diamond grading or identification report is an independent laboratory document describing the characteristics of a submitted stone. Depending on the laboratory and service, it can include measurements, weight, colour, clarity, cut information, proportions, fluorescence, plotted characteristics and origin identification.
Report Is Not the Same as a Valuation
A grading report describes a stone. It does not automatically tell you the replacement value, resale price or what a dealer will pay. A valuation considers a different question and can involve market pricing, setting, condition and intended purpose.
Check the Report
When a report number is available, use the issuing laboratory’s official verification service where possible. Some stones also carry a microscopic laser inscription on the girdle, but inscriptions should be checked in context and are not a substitute for proper identification if fraud is suspected.
Natural and Lab-Grown Reports
Reports should clearly distinguish origin. Laboratory-grown diamond reporting systems can differ from natural-diamond reports and have changed over time. For example, GIA moved to a Premium/Standard quality-assessment approach for qualifying laboratory-grown diamonds from October 2025.
Gold Factory Diamonds
Gold Factory sells diamonds with various laboratory reports depending on the stone. Ask us what documentation comes with the exact diamond you are considering rather than assuming every diamond carries the same laboratory certificate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can certificates be forged?
Fraud is possible, so report verification and inspection of the actual stone remain important.
Can I verify a report number?
Many laboratories provide an official online report-check service.
Do all diamonds come with GIA reports?
No. Documentation varies by stone.
Is a certificate proof of value?
No. A grading report and a valuation serve different purposes.
